What is a Miracle

I think it is necessary that we have a clear picture of what we mean by a miracle. Here are some definitions:

“An event that appears so inexplicable by the laws of nature, that it is held to be supernatural in origin or an act of God.”

“An act beyond human power, an impossibility.”

It is logical that greater the impossibility, greater the miracle. For example, should a person expire before our eyes and is certified dead by a qualified medical man, yet later on a mystic or a saint commands the corpse to rise, and to everybody’s astonishment, the person gets up and walks away, we would label that as a miracle. But if the resurrection of the dead took place after the corpse had been in the mortuary for three days, then we would acclaim this as a greater miracle. And if the dead was made to rise from the grave, decades or centuries after the body had decomposed and rotted away, then in that case we would label it the greatest miracle of them all.

A Common Trait:

It has been a common trait of mankind that whenever a Guide from Allah appeared, they always demanded miracles and supernatural proofs. However, Allah in His infinite mercy, blessed His prophets with numerous miracles and He gave them miracles according to the needs of the people. For example, at the time of Prophet Moses (P.B.U.H), people in Egypt were advanced in magic. So, he was given a miracle which appeared to be like magic. When he was confronted with the magicians of Egypt, the magicians threw their little sticks on the ground and changed them into snakes. Prophet Moses (P.B.U.H) threw his Usaa[1]which became a serpent and ate all the little snakes and when he (Moses) picked up the serpent, it again changed into an Usaa and the little snakes of the magicians had just disappeared into the said wooden rod. The magicians realized that it was no magic but something beyond magic and they bowed down before Moses (P.B.U.H) and accepted him as a prophet.

At the time of Jesus Christ (P.B.U.H) people were performing wonders in Greek medicine. So, he was given healing power. He healed those who were born blind. He gave life back to dead with Allah’s help.

At the time of Prophet Mohammad (P.B.U.H), Arabs boasted about their language. They were eloquent people who used to compose beautiful poetry, still read and appreciated today. And men of wisdom, people with literary and spiritual insight, who were honest enough to themselves, knew that Prophet Mohammad (P.B.U.H) was an unlearned person who couldn’t read or write, couldn’t sign his own name, who never went to any School and grew up in front of them, also knew that the Quran was not poetry. It was something par excellence. They, therefore, recognized and accepted the Quran as a genuine miracle emanating from the God Almighty.

Says the Holy Quran:

“Nay, here are signs  self-evident, in  the  hearts of those endowed with knowledge, and none but the unjust reject our signs.” (The Quran, 29:49)

Knowledge in the above verse means both power of judgment in discerning the value of truth and acquaintance with previous revelation. And that the rejection is also a mark of injustice, a deliberate perversity in going against obvious Signs, which should convince all honest men.

In this small book we won’t be able to go into details but will give you some information regarding the discoveries made by the modern science and what the Quran says about them. After reading this booklet, hopefully, you won’t be able to deny that the Quran is the book of Allah and that Islam is the true religion.

“Soon  will  We[2] show them  our Signs in the (furthest) regions (of the earth), and in their own souls, until it becomes manifest to them that  this  is  the  Truth. Is it not enough that thy Lord doth witness all things? (The Quran, 41:53)
